SAF Association E-Mails

“Fostering the Spirit of Mutual Friendship”

In line with the principal objective of the Association, the Committee is always looking for practical ways to tap into and support the maintaining of links among our members.  Nothing stands still - circumstances change, interests evolve and a few people even seem to get a bit older…

But experience also shows that it’s not very easy to canvass views and ideas among our community!

Hence a modest new initiative, aimed at trying to improve our effective communications on two levels.

First, a sharpening up of our ability to get news out to members by email, as well as via the website.  About 500 members are currently on the database, and it would be good to be able to get relevant news out more swiftly and better targeted.  We’re currently looking at different options for bulk messaging – of course with protections and the ability to opt out.

Second is a move to bring us closer, from the centre (the Committee), to the network of other smaller groups that already exists – some based on cap-badge (eg Gunners, FF, ACS) and others that are regional (Wessex Lunch, Scottish Dinner).  We see this as offering mutual benefit, through better channels for practical matters (deconfliction of dates, information and publicity), ideas and views, and the unexpected!  The concept that we’re working on is to create a more active direct link between a named Committee member and a representative of each of those groups.  If successful and the interest is there, it can obviously be rippled further out in due course.

Mike Lobb is coordinating e-mail communication with members and is the current focal point for the overall initiative.  If you did not receive an initial e-mail from Mike on 19/20 August that would indicate that you are not on the e-mail database.  If you would like your e-mail on the database, please contact Mike on safassn@outlook.com.

RAFO HISTORICAL ARCHIVE

RAFO are very keen to identify and preserve heritage items that will help to tell the story of how the Service has developed into the highly respected force that it is today.

A Historical Archive is steadily being built up in Oman, and this is an appeal to members of the Association to consider contributing material from their own sources, eg:

                           Photographs, films

         Records, orders, official papers

         Old maps, wall charts, posters

Badges, items of uniform or personal equipment

… in other words anything that has a historical value attached to it!

Two potential routes for forwarding material:

  Items over the internet: direct to R’d Khalid Al-Kharusi, the RAFO Archivist, at omankhalid1@hotmail.com

‘Hard’ items: through the good offices of the RAF Museum, who have generously offered to collate material and filter for duplicate

OMANI MEDALS

The previous advice to use the service of WJ Towell is no longer working, to quote page 4 of the 2017 Journal:

It is no longer possible to get assistance from the Association or the Omani authorities to replace your medals.

A tried and test route is to use GOOGLE search and type in Omani Medals. There are a number of companies that have them for sale at reasonable prices.

Accommodation in London - The Victory Services Club

Membership available to all serving and retired SAF personnel.

Collect of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces Association

Written by the Rev. Roger Bayldon MBE, TD, WKhM (Dohfar 75-77)

O God the most gracious and most merciful, who art the creator of all lands and peoples and who knows no difference in race nor creed; pour down thy wisdom and grace on us thy servants of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces Association and make us strong in faith and determination so to unite us with all our comrades associated with the Sultanate of Oman. Make us bold in upholding that bond of partnership forged over many years and to be true in heart, mind and spirit, to do thy will. We ask this through Jesus' name. Amen.

For services in the more modern tradition the language of the collect should be changed to :
