Commissioned into the 14th/20th King’s Hussars, John initially served in Germany but, seeking greater adventure, soon volunteered for loan service in Oman. Following attendance on the Beaconsfield Arabic course he arrived in SAF in August 1978, taking over as Squadron Leader of the Armoured Car Squadron in Thumrait. Then still equipped with Saladins, they supported Southern Oman Brigade, taking part in exercises and annual firing camps: but a period of great change was imminent.
A second squadron was formed in the North at MAM, participating in an amphibious-landing exercise reinforcing the South and laying the foundation for a regimental structure in anticipation of the arrival of the M60 Tanks in 1980. John’s role in planning the transformation of Oman’s armoured forces was critical. Initially formed into the Armoured Force of Oman, the structure developed rapidly, leading to the creation of the Sultan of Oman’s Armoured Regiment under the leadership of the very experienced Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Brook MBE WKhM(G) WKhM.
Returning to regimental duty at the end of his seconded tour in 1980, John later retired and joined Defence Sales, subsequently regularly revisiting Oman.
He kept in contact with those with whom he had served and, although sadly unwell for a number of years and despite increasing ill-health, he frequently attended SAF Association events: the East Anglia Lunch in September 2025 being his last.
John died in Stoke Mandeville hospital on 14 January 2026 and is survived by his brother, Barney Micklem.
